When you arrive to the green, I was disappointed to find that they were slow and bumpy. But play well and you’re rewarded with your ball bouncing over fairways and towards greens with spectacular backdrops. If you’re not quite striking it around here it’s easy to run up a cricket score on any hole.

The theme continued as we played on, with wasteland (made up of olive, fig and almond trees) surrounding each fairway. One of our fourball hit a fairway splitting drive over the crest of the hill to find it had rolled across the undulating fairway making its way into a load of bushes and wasteland just a couple of yards off the fairway. Immediately it was obvious that there was little margin for error on this course. But inside the facilities were excellent and we were given a warm welcome from the staff.Īfter paying up and picking up our buggies we had a quick putt and made our way to the first tee. The drive up had reflected that and the clubhouse was the same with a strange architectural design (that has actually won some awards) but to me, it made it look unfinished. Espiche Golf Club is one of the Algarves newest additions only opening in 2012 so we expected the club to be brand new, if not a little incomplete. The first sign of life was the clubhouse that sits on the high point of the property overlooking the golf course. Suddenly we found a sign and drove up the 1.5km driveway, where again there was little sign of anything – let alone a golf course. The drive up was a little bizarre, we were heading up to the hills and Google Maps was taking us over some narrow streets where there was no sign of life at all. Not bad value for a course that’s ranked the 13th best course in the Algarve and 25th in Portugal.Īfter a spot of lunch, we headed up to the course for our 14:30 tee off time. We picked the course as it was just a short ride away from where we were staying in Boavista meaning we could land in Faro, sort out the hire car, make the drive over from the airport and check-in to the villa peacefully.Īnother added bonus was that the course offered a twilight rate – 18 holes of golf with a buggy for €61.50 each. There was free use of the swimming pool and spa on site too which were great to relax after a few hours on the course. We were a group of four sharing an amazing villa overlooking the 17th hole – a nice spot for our morning breakfast. Overall I couldn’t recommend the Boavista resort enough.

Praia da Luz was a little quieter with less going on but a good option for a group of couples. Lagos town had a great vibe, with loads of restaurants, bars and shops – handy when one of us forgot to pack any boxers! We had a couple of great nights out in some of the bars listening to some live music or just having a couple of chilled beers. The villa was on the Boavista Resort, handy as they had a golf course on site and it’s placed in between Lagos town and Praia da Luz meaning we had somewhere to enjoy the evenings. So when we were looking for an end of season, “last few days of summer” getaway, we were naturally drawn to the area.Īfter scouting around, and with so many different options, we finally settled on the Western Algarve and Lagos as our destination for a long weekend.Ī few friends had been here before and recommended the area, even down to the villa, so we decided to take their advice. In 2012 the course was closed for one year and underwent a full makeover, widening fairways, adding new streams, lakes, bunkers plus installation of a state of the art watering and drainage system, which allows the course to be played in all weather conditions.

The main difference between Olivos and Lagos are the tree lined undulating fairways you will find on Los Olivos compared to the Los Lagos course, which is much more open, but scattered with lakes and sand traps to suck your ball in. The Los Olivos Course has undergone extensive regeneration in recent years to bring the course up to USGA requirements.
